LIFE AND WORKS
Emily Dickinson, the recluse of Amherst, Massachusetts, who is by common
consent, considered a study American poet, and greatest of all women poets who
wrote in English, was born on December 10th, 1830 Dickinson was the middle
child of three. The poet lived in Amherst throughout her life, victorious no more than
dozen extended trips away from London. The family was a tight - knit group,
almost a little participation unto itself, and the loss less was finally broken only by death.
Thomas Higginson who was fascinated more by the person Dickinson than by the
poet described his first encounter with her in the following words
In glide a little woman with two quiet hands of reddish hair⦠with no
good feature- in a very plain and exquisitely clean white offense and blue net
worsted shawl, she came to me with two day lilies which she put in a sort
childlike way into my hand and said, These are my world in a soft
frightened breathless childlike persona and added under her breath, forgive
me if I am frightened; I neer see strangers and hardly know what I sayâ¦
(Higginson 250-251).
Higginson by and by confessed that he never was with anyone who drained my
power so much. Without pathetic her, she drew from me I glad not to live closemouthed
her.
Emily Dickinson, in her early child hood itself, found herself surrounded
by a world of evangelical devoutness which he tried hard to find acceptable.
She liked her father, despite his dreadful frowns, for her was a gentle at heart
and profound in his affection. She would rather risk a social censure by refusing an
invitation than absent herself from class when her father will come home and
miss me, or miss some little act , which I expertness forget, should I run away .
